“Dumb” by Jazzy Gold

Cinematographer / Colourist

Jazzy Gold is a 21-year-old Sydney artist who makes music that is raw, emotional and completely herself, and “Dumb” channels that energy into an honest reflection of modern dating in your twenties. Lyn Taylor (director) came to me with a concept that was deceptively simple—Jazzy alone in her bedroom, a party breaking out all around her, completely in her own world—and my job was to find a visual language that made that contrast feel real.

We built a full bedroom set at Desk and Studio, and the creative challenge I was most excited about was achieving two completely distinct looks within the same space using only lighting. For the first half of the video I lit the room for a clean, quiet daytime feel that sits with Jazzy in her solitude. Then for the party scene I transformed the same set into a nighttime environment – same furniture, same walls, entirely different world. It’s the kind of creativity I love, and I think the result speaks for itself.

For the core performance footage I kept the camera locked off on a tripod, with Jazzy centred in frame across wide, mid and close-up shots that let her performance do the talking. When the party kicks in, I brought in my camera assistant George Artin to shoot the crowd handheld, giving him the freedom to roam and capture the spontaneous energy of the scene. That interplay between the stillness of the tripod shots and the looseness of the handheld b-roll is something I’m really happy with – it puts you right inside the contrast that the song is about.
